WORKSHOP INK DRAWING: FUNDAMENTAL CONCETPS & PORTRAIT DRAWING

It is my pleasure to introduce to you my upcoming 8-day Online Workshop: Ink Drawing: Fundamental Concepts & Portrait Drawing that will be started from August 26, 2023, all levels welcome. This workshop will be held on weekends only (Saturday and Sunday), 2 – 2.5 hours per session.

In this Ink Drawing workshop, we will discuss two topics:

  1. Fundamental ink drawing concepts & techniques: Sketching techniques, constructive drawing, object form analysis, shading theory, and basic ink drawing techniques.
  2. Portrait drawing: Basic head proportions & structure, the Loomis method & head constructive drawing, simplified forms, portrait shading, and portrait ink drawing.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE

Part I: Fundamental Concepts & Techniques

  • Sketching Techniques

We will discuss some foundational sketching techniques such as hand movement, sketching warm-up and exercises.

  • Subject Form & Surface Analysis

By analysing the form and the surface of the object, we will understand the structure in depth. This method helps us define the 3-dimensional structure of the object which is useful in shading and ink drawing techniques.

  • Basic Shading Techniques

Discussing the fundamental shading concepts, we will learn how to express the 3-dimensional structure of the subject with tonal value and shading elements such as highlight, core shadow, reflected light,…

  • Ink Techniques

When we have the sketching and the overall shading, we can start to apply the ink drawing. There are different techniques that we can use, from the simple strokes to broken/dashed lines. In addition, we can change the line thickness and spacing to depict the tonal value. Hatching/Cross-hatching drawing methods will be discussed in depth.

Part II: Portrait Ink Drawing

  • Basic head proportions & structure

Discussing basic head proportions, simplifying head structure, introducing the concept of head anatomy, and some suggestions before learning portrait drawing.

  • Loomis method & constructive drawing

Introducing Loomis portrait drawing method, simplified forms, and sketching/constructive drawing by using Loomis’s method.

  • Portrait shading

Discussing lighting in portrait art, process of shading overall value with pencils.

  • Portrait ink drawing

Analysing the surface & structure of the portrait, defining the line directions, expressing the tonal value by using multiple ink techniques, and discussing additional techniques for drawing hair and eyes.

  • This 8-day workshop will be held only on Saturday and Sunday in 4 weeks:

Week 1: August 26 & 27, 2023

Week 2: September 2 & 3, 2023

Week 3: September 9 & 10, 2023

Week 2: September 16 & 17, 2023

  • Recording & Review: All the lessons will be recorded and can be reviewed within 30 days.

Important note: You can sign up for the full 8-day workshop or you can choose to sign up for only one part of the workshop (4 days). If you only want to learn the basic ink drawing techniques, the first part of the workshop will be a good option. If you are interested in learning portrait ink drawing only (or you already attended my basic ink drawing workshop), you can sign up for the second part, but in this part, we will not go through or discuss any fundamental ink techniques.

  • Full 8-day workshop: 215 USD
  • 4-day workshop (only Fundamental Concepts or Portrait Drawing): 120 USD
  • Including supportive guidebooks and manuals.

Process of Registration and Payment (Important)

Below are some important steps to follow for the registration and payment:

  • Check the workshop schedule (date and time) carefully before sign up.
  • Registration form: Choose your workshop option, click the registration link, fill in the form and submit.
  • Confirmation Email and Payment: After submitting, you will receive a registration confirmation email from Tri Le in 48 hours. You only need to make the payment after receiving the confirmation email. Payment link will be attached in the email. 
  • Registration complete: After making the payment, you will receive an email from Tri Le with workshop detailed information, guidebooks/manuals, zoom link and more. Your registration is completed.
  • Cancellation policy: If your schedule is changed and you cannot join the course, you can cancel the registration 06 days before the workshop, your payment will be fully refunded.
  • Workshop link: Zoom link, ID, and Passcode will be sent to your email 24 – 48 hours before the workshop starts.
